Observerships for International Physicians, Nurses, and Administrators

Clinical and administrative observership opportunities are offered to fully trained international healthcare providers with multiple years of experience actively practicing or working in the health field. Physicians, administrators, and nurses that are not employed at a Johns Hopkins institution may be selected to observe clinical activities and/or other activities as applicable for educational purposes at The Johns Hopkins Hospital Health System.

As the name implies, an observership is an informal observational experience and does not constitute training. Approved observers may not participate in direct or indirect patient care or management. Additionally, a limited number of such informal educational opportunities are available in clinical departments at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Observers do not receive any form of certification from Johns Hopkins for the time of their appointment.

What Are Observership Requirements?

• Experience requirement- This program is offered to fully trained international healthcare providers with several years of experience actively practicing or working in the health field.
• Dates- JHI will work with the specific Johns Hopkins department and experts to determine a one (1) to two (2) week period where they are available to accommodate your timeframe.  One week is defined as five (5) work days, Monday-Friday. 
• Agenda- Johns Hopkins Medicine International (JHI) will make every effort to develop a rewarding learning experience that incorporates as many of your goals as possible. An agenda will be crafted to meet your objectives, along with any necessary instructions or materials. 
• Fees and Costs- The approximate cost for an observership is based on the JHI standard rates and policies. More detailed payment information will be provided at a later step in the application process.
• Accommodations- Any travel related expenses, including airfare, hotel accommodation, meals, and transportation will be at your own expense. We will work with you find accommodations at the Johns Hopkins discounted rates once the dates for your visit have been finalized. 
• Mandatory Language Requirement- All observers must be proficient in English.
• Mandatory Health Insurance Requirement- International observers are required to have adequate health insurance coverage for the duration of their stay in the U.S.  Proof of insurance will be required.
• Mandatory Immunization Requirement- To prevent any possibility of risk to patients, staff, and visitors, JHI requires proof of immunization and health screening for several infectious diseases. The observer shall be responsible for obtaining any required immunizations or tests at his/her own expense before arrival in the U.S. Official documentation will need to be submitted to JHI prior to arrival.

Please note that JHI cannot guarantee that the submission of an application will result in acceptance. Application review may take up to four (4) weeks.
