Current Title: Dr. Cofrancesco is an Associate Professor of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins Institute for Excellence in Education Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Institute for Excellence in Education (IEE) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Education and Training: Dr. Cofrancesco received his bachelor’s degree from Columbia College of Columbia University, worked for a time in international educational administration, and then received his MD degree with honors from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He trained in internal medicine and medicine/primary care at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and the Albert Einstein Medical Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he also served as the inaugural chief resident for primary care. He later received his MPH with honors from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health along with completing his General Internal Medical fellowship training at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
Current Administrative Positions: In addition to leading the IEE, Dr. Cofrancesco serves as the Director of the Johns Hopkins GIM Clinician Scholar Mentorship Program, is Medical Director for the Rockland Physician Practice at Green Spring Station, is a Thayer Firm faculty member and serves on the Osler Medical Residency Selection Committee, is a member of the GIM Fellowship Advisory Committee as well as the JHUSOM Educational Policy & Curriculum Committee.
Educational Scholarship and Focus: As director of the IEE, Dr. Cofrancesco has increased his focus on all aspects of the institute’s operation and planning. He has published on the clinician-educator and educational techniques. He remains active in teaching and mentoring medical students throughout the curriculum, medicine residents, GIM and ID fellows, and increasingly, educator and clinician-educator faculty.

Davidoff Society, Certificate of Distinction, Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1990) , Johns Hopkins Department of Medicine Ambulatory Preceptor Award (2005), Visiting Professor, Asahi General Hospital, Ahahi, Japan (2009), National Award for Mid-Career Education Mentorship, Society of General Internal Medicine (2010), Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Professors' Award (2012).
Clinical and Additional Research Focus: Dr. Cofrancesco has a thriving general internal medicine practice and also provides care to individuals living with HIV infection. He has published and lectured extensively in the areas of HIV antiretroviral treatments, HIV resistance and the long-term complications of HIV treatment.
Personal: Dr. Cofrancesco born in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, is the second of four boys. His family is very proud of what he does, but admit they have no idea what that is.
