Title:  3D Printed Modular Scaffolds:  Pre-clinical and Clinical Experience

Abstract:  3D printed scaffolds have been a research topic in tissue engineering for over 15 years, due to their potential advantages in replicating complex anatomic defects, providing controlled pore architectures,and the potential for being scalable and highly reproducible, both characteristics important for regulatory approval.  However, as with all engineered scaffolds, 3D printed scaffolds have their limitations.  In this talk, I will discuss how direct characteristics of 3D printed scaffolds affect tissue regeneration, and our experience with utilizing such scaffolds in pre-clinical models as well as clinically.  In addition, extension of 3D printed scaffolds by integrating other fabrication processes in connection with 3D printing through modularity to overcome limitations associated with 3D printed scaffolds.
