- In 2009, The Johns Hopkins Hospital received the DVTeam Care award in the hospitals over 200 beds category. The VTE Collaborative won for their work implementing the “Mandatory Computer-Based Decision Support System” described above. In 2009, the Journal of the American Medical Association published a commentary by Drs. Streiff and Haut about the CMS decision to add VTEs that occur after total knee or hip arthroplasty to its list of “never events,” that would result in decreased payments to hospitals. - Acting U.S. Surgeon General Steven K. Galson was the featured speaker at Johns Hopkins’ 1st Annual DVT Symposium in March 2009, in support of “The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent DVT and PE.” [Link to http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/topics/deepvein/]. About 300 physicians, nurses, other health care professionals, and members of the public attended the half-day symposium.
