| Johns Hopkins is committed to the rapidly growing biotechnology industry, the multidisciplinary field that applies scientific discoveries to the development of medical products. Johns Hopkins' undergraduate and graduate interdisciplinary curriculum is among the nation's most respected academic programs, teaching students to learn and succeed in one of medical science's most rapidly growing fields, with concentrations in basic research, product development, regulatory issues and commercialization. The Johns Hopkins Office of Licensing and Technology Development ensures rapid transfer of Hopkins innovations to the private sector, where scientific discoveries can be more efficiently developed for the public benefit. In 2002 Johns Hopkins leaders joined with Baltimore City Mayor Martin O'Malley and other local and state officials to announce the $200 million East Baltimore Development project, one of Baltimore's most ambitious urban renewal efforts. The project's anchor will be a 22-acre biotechnology research park, providing traditional laboratory and office space for university endeavors and private companies related to the biotechnology industry.
