JHHSC Retirement Plan (Pension)

Outside of the 403(b) savings plan, another way we help employees build financial security is through the JHHSC Retirement Plan—also known as a "defined benefit pension plan" or "pension" for short. If you are eligible for a pension, you will receive a set monthly payment during your retirement.

How the plan works

The amount you'll receive is calculated based on your years of service and the compensation you received while employed. Your benefit will generally increase with every year you continue to work with the participating employer.

Employees are automatically enrolled once you meet eligibility requirements.

For more detailed information, download the summary plan description.

Eligibility

Non-represented (non-union) employees

Non-union employees become eligible to participate in the pension plan, at no cost, after one year of employment during which you have worked 1,000 hours or more. JHHSC/JHH pays the full cost of this basic retirement benefit you meet the 5-year vesting requirement. The amount of your benefit is calculated using a formula based on length of employment and your earnings (average of highest 3 salaries out of the last 10 years or less).

Death Benefit: To ensure that all vested employees receive the same death benefit from the pension plan, the plan has been amended to provide a death benefit prior to retirement to all employees regardless of their marital status. Previously, this benefit was provided to married employees only. This change is retroactive to July 1, 2003. Additional information and the beneficiary form may be obtained by contacting the Pension Office at 443-997-3789. You can also download the beneficiary form.

Represented (union) employees

Union employees can participate in the pension plan after one year of employment during which you have worked 1,000 or more hours if you are over 21 years old. If you are under 21, you must have completed three years of employment at 1,000 or more hours per year. JHH pays the full cost of this basic retirement benefit after you've met the five-year vesting requirement. The amount of your benefit is calculated using a formula based on your length of Hopkins service and your earnings (final average).
