Training Programs for Laboratory Staff

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) offers a number of laboratory-related training modules on a continuing basis throughout the year. These modules include courses on Biosafety, Bloodborne Pathogens, Fire Safety, and Hazard Communication, Laboratory Safety, Radiation Safety, and Shipment of Hazardous Agents (DOT/IATA Dangerous Goods Shipping Certification) .

All laboratory personnel are expected to attend:

  • Biosafety course - which covers the description and requirements of biosafety levels BSL1 and BSL2
  • Bloodborne Pathogen course - Individuals that may be occupationally exposed to bloodborne pathogens must attend the bloodborne pathogen course on an annual basis as required by OSHA. Please refer to HSE policy #501 for details.
  • Certification course - for individuals who ship hazardous materials (including biological samples)
  • Fire Safety - instructs employees how to react when there is a fire in their area or when the alarm is sounding in their building. Also explains the annual requirements of fire drills and how JHMI buildings are constructed so that horizontal evacuations are acceptable in most buildings.
  • Hazard Communication course - reviews the management and disposal of hazardous materials including chemicals, and labeling of secondary containers
  • Laboratory Safety course - reviews the items covered by the annual laboratory research safety inspections
  • Radiation Safety course. The Primary Investigator is responsible for assuring that individuals who handle radioactive materials under their authorization are trained in radiation safety. This training may be done in-house or through the Radiation Safety course.

These courses help maintain compliance with Federal and State regulations and provide a safer working environment for all of us at Johns Hopkins Institutions. In addition, the successful completion of these courses may fulfill some of the safety compliance requirements of certain grant-funding organizations.
