Services

In order to meet some of the Wellness needs of the faculty and staff, a limited array of Wellness activities are offered through the office of Occupational Health Services. The full array of Wellness activities is presently offered at the Homewood campus. Activities are not available at remote campuses, unless specified. Faculty and staff able to participate in these Wellness activities are those who are eligible for health care benefits through the University.

2007 FLU VACCINATIONS

    The 2007 Flu Vaccination schedule for the Homewood Campus will be as follows. Please be aware that a valid JHU ID will be required.

    Tuesday, October 30, 2007
    9:30-11:30 am and 1:30-3:30 pm
    Levering Hall, Great Hall and the Sherwood Room

    Wednesday, October 31, 2007
    9:30-11:30 am and 1:30-3:30 pm
    Levering Hall, Conference Room A and the Great Hall

    After November 20th and through the month of December, vaccines will be given in the office of Occupational Health Services, 3100 Wyman Park Drive, Suite W-601 on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 2:00-4:00 pm.

MEDICAL SURVEILLANCE

    In order to meet federal and state standards, the Department of Occupational Health Services administers the following medical surveillance:
    • Tuberculosis
    • Respiratory/Asbestos
    • Hepatitis B
    • Hearing

HIV TESTING

    Free and confidential HIV testing may be performed at your request. Please call the Department of Occupational Health Services for more information or to setup an appointment.

Occupational Injury/Illness Treatment

The Department of Occupational Health Services provides immediate treatment for all work related injuries and illness. We provide referrals to specialists within the Johns Hopkins Institutions and effective case management for injury prevention and control.

If you are injured at work, please notify your supervisor immediately and contact the Department of Occupational Health Services at 410.516.0450.

If an injury should occur on a night shift or weekend, please seek the appropriate medical treatment and follow-up with the Department of Occupational Health Services the next business day.

Programs

CPR TRAINING

    Class Adult/AED CPR Training

    Cost $10.00 for materials

    The CPR classes are taught by certified instructors. The classes are informative; covering topics such as prevention, risk factors and of course CPR. Each participant will leave the class with an American Heart Association card which is good for two (2) years.

    Training is also provided on the use of the Automatic External Defibrillators which have been placed around the Homewood campus.

    If you are attending the CPR class, please remember:

    Before the class, please keep the following in mind
    • Wear comfortable clothes; we will be on the floor practicing.
    • Reschedule if you are ill with a cold, flu or cold sores.
    • Wear the least amount of lipstick and/or jewelry.

MINDFULNESS MEDITATION

    Class Mindfulness Meditation

    Mindfulness Meditation teaches a technique for calming which allows the body to deal with stress better.

SMOKING CESSATION

    Though smoking is an addiction, it can be conquered. Get the help you need to quit for good!

SEATED MASSAGE

    Enjoy the stress relieving benefits of massage therapy. For a $10 charge, you can receive a 15-minute, seated, chair massage, which concentrates on the back, shoulders, and neck. The therapist visits the Homewood campus, JHU at Eastern, the Montgomery County campus and the East Baltimore campus.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

    In an effort to assist employees who are interested in maintaining good health through sensible eating habits, the "Weight Watchers at Work" program is offered at the Homewood, East Baltimore campuses and other outlying sites.

FITNESS & TONING

    Class Muscle Conditioning and Toning

    August 7 - October 11, 2007 (10 weeks)

    Cost $30 for 1 class a week for 10 weeks
    $50 for 2 classes a week for 10 weeks

    A Muscle Conditioning and Toning class is offered throughout the year at the Homewood campus. The instructor concentrates on toning and conditioning by beginning with a warm up. Exercise using hand weights focuses on strengthening the upper body. The floor work which follows emphasizes strengthening the abdomen and legs. A cool down ends the session.

YOGA

    Cost $40/$60/$90, for once/twice/three times a week for 10 weeks

    Yoga is a series of body positions and movements designed to calm the mind, relax the body, ease the spirit and to unite these three aspects. In addition to providing exercise and relaxation, Yoga is believed to help participants change their mental and physical responses.

    These classes are a combination of two types of Yoga, Iyengar and Kripalu which focus primarily on improving awareness of mind, body and spirit.

Direction

From NORTH: Take 83S towards Baltimore City. Take 28th Street exit. Proceed on 28th Street to Howard Street. Turn left onto Howard and continue through one traffic light. Get into the left lane and turn left onto Wyman Park Drive. The center is on the left.

From SOUTH: Get onto 295 North and proceed towards Baltimore City. After the first two traffic lights on Russell Street and adjacent to the stadium, there will be a right hand turn-off for Martin Luther King Blvd. Turn right and stay in the left lane. The on-ramp will circle around (passing Camden Yards) and take you onto MLK Boulevard. Proceed on MLK Boulevard to Howard Street. Turn left onto Howard. After the 29th Street intersection, get into the left lane and turn left at Wyman Park Drive. The center is on the left.
