Mabel Alsobrooks, Talented Hands and a Giving Soul
Perhaps the only thing matched by the sizeable talent in Mabel Alsobrooks' nimble hands is her strong belief in giving to others. Her gift of 11 beautiful hand-made blankets to clients of the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center is a testament to both.
Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center clients are the most recent benefactors of Ms. Alsobrooks' talents, but many, many others have benefited from her generosity. Born and raised in Howard County, Ms. Alsobrooks resided in Prince George's County for 20 years and enjoyed a career of the same length in the public school system there. Prior to this, she worked as a buyer for Montgomery General Hospital. Through the years, Ms. Alsobrooks has crocheted hundreds of blankets for patients in her residing counties, as well as for the Boarder Babies program at the Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Recently returning to live in Columbia to be near her three daughters, two sons, 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, Mrs. Alsobrooks decided that she would like to give within Howard County, thus the wonderful donation of cozy afghans to Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center clients.
"The Howard Hospital Foundation is so thankful for these gifts from the heart," noted the Foundation's Annual Giving Associate, Susan Boyd. "Ms. Alsobrooks is an inspiration and a wonderful example of how one person can brighten the lives of many."
