Interventional radiology is a subspecialty of radiology in which both vascular and nonvascular diseases are treated in a minimally invasive approach using small catheters and catheter-based instruments. Procedures are performed with local and intravenous sedation and are guided by radiological imaging techniques such as fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and Computed Tomography (CT).
The interventional radiologist is a physician trained in percutaneous image-guided procedures with the clinical skills required to integrate interventional procedures into overall patient management. Interventional radiologists work closely with other physicians and play an important role on the treatment team.
Interventional radiology procedures offer a cost-effective health care alternative to certain conventional medical and surgical treatment. Often, these procedures pose less risk to patients and frequently decrease hospitalization time. Interventional radiology procedures are sometimes the only viable therapeutic option for critically-ill patients unable to tolerate a surgical procedure.
Procedures are performed following consultation between your physician and the interventional radiologist. With outpatient procedures, most patients can go home after a few hours. Some procedures may require a 24-hour hospital stay.

- Angiograms and angioplasty for treatment of blockage of arteries related to peripheral vascular disease or body organs
- Uterine Fibroid Embolization for the treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids
- Radiofrequency ablation of tumors
- Chemoembolization of liver tumors
- Insertion of Vascular Access Devices such as Hickman catheters, hemodialysis catheters and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC)
- Tube Placements such as nephrostomy tube placement and biliary tube placement to relieve obstruction
- Image guided biopsy
- Image guided drainage such as paracentesis or thoracentesis
