FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 30, 2014
COLUMBIA, Md. — Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine (HCGH) is pleased to announce its re-designation as a Cardiac Interventional Center by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) for a period of five years.
The designation indicates that HCGH meets Maryland state standards in the care of patients transported by emergency medical services (EMS) who are experiencing the most serious and life-threatening type of heart attack, called an ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). A STEMI occurs when an artery that supplies blood to the heart is completely blocked. As a Cardiac Interventional Center, HCGH is able to provide emergency catheter-based coronary intervention techniques to clear the blockage.
These techniques are the most optimal state-of-the-art care, as shown by national and international studies. The HCGH program’s development and sustainability has required collaboration among community clinical cardiologists, academic and community interventional cardiologists, Howard County EMS and HCGH’s clinical staff, as well as strong hospital administrative support.
Each year in the U.S., approximately 300,000 people have a STEMI. To prevent death, it’s critical to immediately restore blood flow, either by surgically opening the blocked vessel or by giving clot-busting medication. HCGH performs approximately 100 STEMI procedures each year.
