HEART DISEASE ABCS

TO AVOID HEART DISEASE, KNOW YOUR ABCS, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS

Your ABCs are the fundamentals of a new heart disease prevention initiative by the federal government known as the 'Million Hearts Campaign.' Michael Blaha, a cardiologist at Johns Hopkins, applauds the effort.

BLAHA: The million hearts campaign is really important because its been shown that 50% of all the reduction in heart attacks occur by community based efforts, and just half of the reduction in heart attacks has come from what we do in the clinic as doctors. These population based efforts are really, really important, so the department of health and human services has identified an ABCs approach to reducing heart attacks in the community, with an emphasis on getting aspirin to the right patients, getting blood pressure reduction to those who have high blood pressure, cholesterol reduction to those who have high cholesterol, and getting those who smoke to quit. :34

So expect to be hearing about your ABCs soon. At Johns Hopkins, I'm Elizabeth Tracey.
