MAXIMAL BENEFIT

ANCHOR LEAD: PSILOCYBIN CAN BE USED IN A HELPFUL WAY, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS

Psilocybin can be used to help people feel interconnected to others as well as the universe at large, several ongoing studies have demonstrated, but there is a risk of fear and anxiety when the drug is used. Now a Johns Hopkins study led by Roland Griffiths has determined the optimal dose of psilocybin to maximize positive aspects while minimizing negative emotions.

GRIFFITHS: This fear and anxiety that can be occasioned by psilocybin represents one of the toxic aspects of non-medical use of psilocybin. One of the most dangerous aspects of psilocybin is that people may experience extreme fear or anxiety and then engage in panic behavior or dangerous behavior that puts themselves or others at risk. :23

Griffiths says dosage information can be used to inform clinical trials where the drug is being used to help people overcome smoking, addiction to illicit drugs, and fears of their own mortality. At Johns Hopkins, I'm Elizabeth Tracey.
