NO EFFECT
EATING A HIGH FAT MEAL SEEMS TO HAVE NO IMPACT IN THE SHORT TERM, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
Would you sign up for a diet study where your breakfast was high in both calories and fat? That’s what happened in a recent study led by Kerry Stewart, a cardiovascular health and exercise expert at Johns Hopkins.
STEWART: We fed them a McDonald’s breakfast that consisted of over 900 calories and 50 grams of fat, so for most people that’s about half the amount of calories they should be eating for the entire day. Plus the meal consisted of 50 grams of fat. The reason why we did this was because if someone’s on a low carb diet they’re going to be eating higher levels of fat pretty much on an everyday basis. We wanted to see at least acutely, what would a high fat meal do? And in fact in contrast to other studies that have been done we found absolutely no adverse effects. :34
Stewart looked at the responsiveness or elasticity of blood vessels when a high fat meal is consumed and found no acute problems. At Johns Hopkins, I’m Elizabeth Tracey.
