TRAUMA CENTER COSTS

TRAUMA CENTERS ARE EXPENSIVE, BUT THEY’RE WORTH IT, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS

Trauma centers are among the most expensive medical facilities to maintain, demanding the latest in technology as well as highly skilled on-call staff.  A Johns Hopkins study led by Ellen MacKenzie shows that despite high costs, trauma centers are a win-win.

MACKENZIE: We were very interested in looking at the relationship between costs on the one hand and outcomes or effectiveness on the other.  What we were able to show is that the bottom line is that trauma centers are not only effective they are cost effective.  So when you compare their costs in relation to their effectiveness, and compare that in relation to other technologies that are well accepted, trauma centers are basically worth the money.   :26

MacKenzie says that in our current climate of close scrutiny of all health care expenditures, trauma centers should not be a part of cost cutting measures, particularly as they often save the lives of younger people.  At Johns Hopkins, I’m Elizabeth Tracey.
