COST OF PROSTATE CANCER TREATMENT

A NEW ANALYSIS REVEALS THE TRUE COST OF VARIOUS TREATMENTS FOR  PROSTATE CANCER, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS

Hormonal therapy is likely the most expensive treatment option for prostate cancer when long term costs are analyzed, a Johns Hopkins study led by Claire Snyder has found.  Not surprisingly, watchful waiting or active surveillance, where men are monitored over time to see whether they need additional treatment, was least expensive.  Snyder says the study can help patients and providers assess their options.

SNYDER: For men who have treatment options it shows what the trade offs are in terms of whether costs are in the short term or the long term, whether those costs are related to inpatient care or outpatient care.  I think this study is relevant to men who are making this decision but also to physicians who might not have known that for example that hormonal therapy while less expensive in the short term might be one of the most expensive options in the long term.      :33

As healthcare reform continues such studies will also inform policy makers.  At Johns Hopkins, I’m Elizabeth Tracey.
