THINKING AND VITAMIN D
LOW LEVELS OF VITAMIN D HAVE NOW BEEN SHOWN TO COMPROMISE THINKING, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
People with low levels of vitamin D in their blood are at higher risk for developing cognitive decline and ultimately, dementia, a recent long term study found. Michelle Bellantoni, a geriatrics expert at Johns Hopkins, says this study adds to the existing evidence.
BELLANTONI: The association has been established now that vitamin D deficiency is associated with cognitive decline. My interpretation is twofold: one that there may be a role in the metabolism but also there is overall a decline in health and wellness activities as one loses executive function. For example to think about one’s diet, to go to the grocery store get those fresh fruits and vegetables and dairy products. Not a surprise then for somebody who’s losing executive function to become vitamin D deficient. :31
