DRUGSTORE GENETIC TESTING
ANCHOR LEAD: SHOULD YOU OBTAIN GENETIC TESTING VIA A KIT AVAILABLE IN DRUGSTORES? ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
Genetic testing kits were supposed to become available a week or so ago through Walgreen’s drugstores, but now those marketing plans have been put on hold after the FDA stepped into the fray. Joan Scott, director of the Johns Hopkins Genetics and Public Policy Center, says one of the concerns is how comprehensive the tests aren’t.
SCOTT: They may only be testing for a few of the genetic variants that are related to that disease so you may get an incomplete risk assessment based on just the testing for the few snps that they’re doing, the few genetic variants that they’re doing. The other thing you miss is all the other risk factors that a person may have for a particular condition that are not being taken into account because they’ve only gotten a genetic test. :297
Scott says genes frequently do not tell all, and consumers may not be aware of that limitation. At Johns Hopkins, I’m Elizabeth Tracey..
