CANCER AND INSULIN
ANCHOR LEAD: DOES INSULIN CAUSE CANCER? ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
Long-acting insulin, marketed under the brand name ‘Lantus,’ is used by millions of people all around the world. Now this type of insulin has been implicated as a cause of cancer in a couple of studies. Christopher Saudek, a diabetes expert at Johns Hopkins, says the evidence is too conflicting and confusing to justify stopping its use.
SAUDEK: To me, in the end people should continue to take their insulin whether it’s Lantus insulin or other kinds because we know that poor diabetic control will clearly associate with more deaths and more complications from diabetes so very important to continue to take the insulin. The scientific will gradually work out whether there is any increased risk as all but my suspicion is that that was a spurious finding and will not be repeated. :28
Saudek says the risks of poorly controlled diabetes are immediate while a nebulous concern about cancer sometime in the future shouldn’t impact therapy. At Johns Hopkins, I’m Elizabeth Tracey.
