People with celiac disease, an inflammatory reaction to gluten, found in wheat, barley and rye, have lots to worry about. How to consume a healthy diet while avoiding such foods, dealing with what can be a painful condition that may flare at any time- it’s no wonder more depression and anxiety seem to go hand in hand with celiac disease. Now a new study shows that simply taking B vitamins may help. Redonda Miller, an internal medicine expert at Johns Hopkins, describes the findings.
MILLER : It noted an improvement in a patient’s sense of well-being, lower scores on anxiety scales and depression scales. And I think that is an important outcome. It is a small study but vitamin B supplementation is pretty darn harmless. It’s cheap, it’s simple, we don’t know of any adverse events so I put this in my pocket in my patients with celiac disease who may have some depression and anxiety, I might give them a trial of vitamin B supplementation and see what happens. :28
