MORE SWINE FLU
ANCHOR LEAD: WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU THINK YOU MAY HAVE THE FLU? ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
Symptoms of the flu include may include fever, muscle aches and pains, sore throat and cough, among others. If you develop these symptoms, what should you do? Gabor Kelen, director of the office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response at Johns Hopkins, responds.
KELEN: If you believe that you have the flu or you show the classic symptoms which are the same as any other flu that you might have go ahead and call your physician if you have one. If you don’t believe that you have an emergency please do not come to the hospital simply consult with a local physician. Two, wash your hands, really very standard precautions about sneezing and washing your hands afterward, try not to be in contact with people who are ill and if you yourself are ill try and contain yourself within your own household. :32
Kelen says that while some of the available antiviral drugs are effective, they must be started very early in the course of the infection. At Johns Hopkins I’m Elizabeth Tracey.
