GLYCEMIC INDEX

ANCHOR LEAD:   HOW IMPORTANT IS WHAT YOU EAT IN MANAGING TYPE 2 DIABETES?  ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS

Consuming foods with a so-called low glycemic index seems to help people with type 2 diabetes control their average blood sugar better, a recent study concluded.  Yet Christopher Saudek, a diabetes expert at Johns Hopkins, says this is not the most important factor.

SAUDEK:  Most people with type 2 diabetes need to lose weight, and that’s the most effective treatment of all.  That requires a low calorie diet.  If you can do that that will be very effective, if you add on to that a good understanding of how much carbohydrate you have in your meal and avoiding the concentrated sugars, that will add a lot too.  If you then add on a glycemic index calculation on everything you eat then that seems to add slightly more.            :30

Saudek also advocates exercise as part of an overall strategy for managing type 2 diabetes.  I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
