ANCHOR LEAD: THE SURGEON GENERAL WARNS ABOUT THE DANGER OF BLOOD CLOTS, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
Deep vein thrombosis or DVT is something the US surgeon general wants you to think about if you have pain in your calf muscles or perhaps elsewhere in your legs. Elizabeth Ratchford, director of the Johns Hopkins vascular center, says your doctor needs to think carefully about why you’re having pain.
RATCHFORD: The first thing is to take a step back and think about what the underlying situation is, so if the person just got back from a long plane trip to Australia then immediately you think about a clot in the vein and that’s where you go straight to the emergency room or if they just had surgery or they’re pregnant or they’re taking oral contraceptives, then that’s where you don’t even think twice because you have to rule it out right away. A lot of those other symptoms are nonspecific so if you really want to be safe then you have to get an ultrasound. :27
Ultrasound is quick, painless and easy to do, and if the cause of your leg is a blood clot it will be easily found using the technique. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting
