ANCHOR LEAD: IS THE SO CALLED ‘MEDITERRANEAN DIET’ BEST FOR SUSTAINED WEIGHT LOSS? ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
The low carbohydrate diet known as the ‘Mediterranean diet’ may be the best for sustaining weight loss over time, a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine found. But Lawrence Cheskin, director of the weight management center at Johns Hopkins, says its not a case of one size fits all.
CHESKIN: There’s no reason not to use low carb dieting for additional weight loss. It seems to work at least as well as low fat dieting, but the long term results are, I think, still in some doubt of which diet is best and I think its probably best to individualize your approach based on what your needs are and what your taste preferences are and what kind of support you’ll get for different types of diets, so choose your diet based on those factors rather than just assume that for everyone you should be recommending one type of diet like a low carb diet. :31
Getting an expert to help you assess your own situation is likely best, Cheskin says. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
