IS WII BAD?
ANCHOR LEAD: WII SPORTS MAY CREATE OVERUSE INJURIES, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
Popular video games such as Wii may cause joint or muscle injuries when they’re played too much, some critics of the devices contend. Edward McFarland, a sports medicine expert at Johns Hopkins, says some specific sports are more risky than others.
MCFARLAND: The sports that are involved in Wii that most people play are golf, baseball and tennis. Tennis and baseball are both sports that are very stressful on the shoulder particularly, golf is not quite so bad unless you have some condition like arthritis or a torn rotator cuff. :16
McFarland thinks the likelihood of injury is low with Wii, but he does take exception with the device for another reason.
MCFARLAND: The biggest problem with Wii is people would rather do that than actually do the sport. There’s really not much aerobic capacity generated by doing Wii. I try to tell my kids I’d rather them go out and play a little tennis than do it on the television. :13
McFarland also advocates cross training to avoid sports-related injuries. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
