MEN AND BONES
ANCHOR LEAD: WHY ARE MEN ALSO AT RISK FOR OSTEOPOROSIS AS THEY AGE? ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
New guidelines for managing osteoporosis in men have been issued by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Michelle Bellantoni, a geriatrics expert at Johns Hopkins, says these guidelines identify one very important risk factor for men.
BELLANTONI: They highlight the loss of the male hormones as a cause for osteoporosis in men, but of particular concern for us is men treated for prostate cancer. So that’s not a problem for women, but increasingly older men are treated for prostate cancer and are living for years with this chronic condition and one complication can be weakening of the bone and fractures. :23
Bellantoni says management of osteoporosis in men is largely the same as that for women, with calcium supplements and a class of medications called bisphosphonates at the top of the list. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
