GUIDELINES FOR MEN
ANCHOR LEAD: NEW FEDERAL GUIDELINES FOR MANAGEMENT OF OSTEOPOROSIS IN MEN HAVE BEEN ISSUED, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
The myth persists that osteoporosis is a condition afflicting only older women, but men too are at risk. The federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has issued new guidelines for diagnosising and managing osteoporosis in men. Michelle Bellantoni, a geriatrics expert at Johns Hopkins, compares these guidelines with those for women.
BELLANTONI: I’d say they are very similar in some ways with women, and then there are a few key areas to focus in for men. What’s similar is that if there is a fracture in an adult one should consider osteoporosis as an underlying medical condition that has resulted in that fracture. So an adult man regardless of age, should be screened for osteoporosis. :21
Fractures of the hip especially are linked to death in older persons, regardless of gender, so detection and management of osteoporosis is important for both men and women. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
