ANCHOR LEAD: FOOT ULCERS IN PEOPLE WITH DIABETES NEED ATTENTION, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
People with diabetes need to pay especial attention to their feet, since ulcers there can lead to very serious complications, with a recent study underscoring the fact that primary care physicians may forget to look at both feet in their patients with diabetes. Christopher Saudek, a diabetes expert at Johns Hopkins, explains.
SAUDEK: If there are foot ulcers the first thing to do is to take them seriously. To get yourself to a podiatrist or a surgeon who is able to clean the ulcer and be sure that its superficial and that it heals properly. A wound care center is often indicated. But you should take it seriously if you do have a foot ulcer because that is the setting where it can progress, it can get infected and you may not have good circulation to cure the problem and that does lead to amputations. :28
Only some folks with diabetes are at risk for foot ulcers, so talk with your doctor to find out if you’re in that group. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
