ANCHOR LEAD: GETTING SEVERAL EXPERTS INVOLVED IN EVALUATING AN OLDER PERSON’S ENVIRONMENT HELPS THEM AGE IN PLACE, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
Having an older person fully evaluated in their own home by a team of experts keeps them at home longer and makes them happier, a recent Lancet study concludes. Older people were seen by a geriatrician, an expert in home safety, and other professionals to assess every aspect of their environment. Michelle Bellantoni, a geriatrician at Johns Hopkins, says the study validates this approach.
BELLANTONI: The recent Lancet reports provides the data that those of us in the field have already experienced, that being that a multidisciplinary evaluation in an older adult’s home results in improved quality of care and satisfaction with that care. In our geriatric medicine practice we highly value quality of care and the satisfaction of that care and the efficiency of that care. Death is inevitable but improving that quality of care is what we do in geriatrics. :29
