HEART TRANSPLANT CENTERS

ANCHOR LEAD: WHERE YOU HAVE A HEART TRANSPLANT IS VERY IMPORTANT, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS

Centers that do 14 or more heart transplants each year see their patients survive longer that centers doing fewer than that number, a Johns Hopkins study has shown.  John Conte, study author and heart transplant surgeon, describes the study.

CONTE:  The overwhelming majority of programs that perform heart transplants in this country perform less than ten transplants per year, and so you have to ask yourself the question how do those programs do?  And that’s one of the reasons we did this review and it really shows us that patients don’t do as well if you have a heart transplant in a program that does fewer than ten transplants.            :23

Conte says that just as in many other highly specialized areas of medicine, its likely the team that’s important in improving outcomes.  Experienced nurses, anesthesiologists, surgeons and the post transplant care providers are equally critical to the success of any operation.  I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
