ANCHOR LEAD: SYNCHRONIZING MASTECTOMY AND RECONSTRUCTION CAN HELP BREAST CANCER PATEINTS, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
Many women who need a mastectomy for breast cancer don’t hear about all their surgical options at the time of the first surgery. Gedge Rosson, chief of breast reconstruction at Johns Hopkins, says reconstruction can often start then.
ROSSON: A patient who is interested in having a little bit more surgery at the time of their mastectomy in the form of some type of breast reconstruction can wake up already having their full breast reconstruction or at least partially reconstructed in a staged fashion. Those patients are already working towards being quote put back together and so that original surgery might be a little bit more because we add the reconstruction component but the patients end up happier because they feel they’re moving forward. :33
Rosson says women should seek a comprehensive breast center in order to streamline their options with respect to breast cancer treatment. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
