ANCHOR LEAD: MENTAL DISORDERS AMONG KIDS ARE MORE COMMON THAN MOST PEOPLE THINK, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
If you think ADHD is overdiagnosed among US kids, the real incidence of mental disorders may surprise you. John Walkup, a child psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins, says that’s because so many committed people are working so hard to help these children.
WALKUP: What most moms and dads and most citizens of the United States don’t realize is how common psychiatric disturbances are in kids. Many schools and families do a really good job in decreasing the degree of impairment these kids have. That’s not to say that these kids couldn’t benefit from being diagnosed and being involved in a treatment plan but it does say that these symptoms can be managed and that the impairment can be lessened if the school system is right and Mom and Dad work hard but it doesn’t mean that these kids don’t have a problem. :30
Walkup says it’s always good to have a diagnosis so that everyone knows what they’re dealing with, and can ask for appropriate help if needed. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
