ADVANCED COLON CANCER
ANCHOR LEAD: PEOPLE WITH ADVANCED COLON CANCER RESPOND BEST TO COMBINATION THERAPY, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
The best treatment for different types of cancer should be change as the disease itself progresses, an approach bolstered by a recent study looking at the best therapy for people with advanced colorectal cancer, Michael Choti, a colon cancer expert at Johns Hopkins, explains.
CHOTI: Patients with advanced colorectal cancer do receive a variety of chemotherapeutic regimens. Some are so-called monotherapy, 5-FU leucovorin, and other regimens are combined with a drug called irinotecan, or another called oxaloplatin, and now more recently biologic agents including bevacizamab and cetuximab are added to these regimens. This trial did seem to suggest that there are certain regimens associated with improved survival, specifically regimens with irinotecan. :30
Because cancer has changed from an acute condition to a chronic one, finding the best treatment at different stages is important. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
