WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY HELPS

ANCHOR LEAD: SIDE EFFECTS NOTWITHSTANDING, WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY IMPROVES LIFESPAN, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS

Gastric bypass surgery and related operations performed to help people lose weight not only help people look and feel better, they also live longer.   That’s according to two studies published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine.  Thomas Magnussen, chief of the weight loss surgery program at Johns Hopkins, says the few negative side effects of surgery can be minimized.

MAGNUSSEN:  There can be complications related to surgery which is why it’s not a magic cure and not for everyone who’s heavy.  But in general the side effects of the surgery such as the malabsorption of nutrients, those can be managed with close and careful followup, and the benefit of the surgery, which is an improved life expectancy, usually outweighs those potential complications of the operation.  Having bariatric surgery is reasonably safe, and it’s certainly better for your health and your long term life expectancy, than doing nothing.                               :27

Remember that experienced surgeons and centers produce the best outcomes.  I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
