ANCHOR LEAD:  A NEW FEDERAL WEBSITE CAN HELP YOU MAKE GOOD CHOICES WHEN IT COMES TO EATING FISH, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS

Fish has been called “brain food” for decades, with more recent research bolstering it’s positive health benefits.  But health risks such as mercury consumption are concerning, as is depletion of the oceans due to overharvesting.  Now NOAA, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association, has launched a new website to help consumers decide which fish are most healthy, for people and the planet. Lawrence Cheskin, an expert in human nutrition at Johns Hopkins, says the new site is helpful.

CHESKIN:  I think it’s very educational, does it address everyone’s concerns? No, but it gives reasoned, thought out, conservative advice on what to do, whether you’re pregnant, for children, of what the benefits and the potential risks are for certain seafoods. Not all fish is alike, and you want to know which ones are higher in omega threes for instance, and which ones are high in mercury potentially, and this gives you objective information on what you should be doing.                 :27
