HEADLINE: ONCE A YEAR
ANCHOR LEAD: A ONCE A YEAR TREATMENT FOR OSTEOPOROSIS IS HERE, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
Medications to treat osteoporosis help reduce fractures, but many people find them difficult to take. Now a new formulation can be infused by IV just once a year. Michelle Bellantoni, a geriatrician at Johns Hopkins, isn’t quite ready to use it yet, however.
BELLANTONI: Almost eighty percent of the geriatric women that I see have osteopenia or osteoporosis. This is a large population with a significant health outcome of fractures. This once yearly therapy is very interesting. It offers the ability to be treated in one setting then to consider that the treatment is done for the year with the exception of adequate calcium and vitamin D, so sounds wonderful. The concern I have with this therapy is the potential side effects and what we don’t know about those side effects just yet. :31
Bellantoni says that since older people also may have other health conditions caution is needed. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
