VIT D AND CANCER
ANCHOR LEAD: CAN VITAMIN D PREVENT CANCER? ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
Vitamin D and calcium supplements may help prevent cancer. That’s the provocative finding of a study using the supplements to prevent osteoporosis in older women, that just happened to see reduced cancer incidence. Michael Choti, director of surgical oncology at Johns Hopkins, says one noteworthy aspect to the study was the supplements seemed to affect all types of cancer.
CHOTI: Well, it was interesting, yes, it was all types of cancers. In the past colon cancers and others have been shown but here they’ve a pretty broad sense. The numbers were very small, so it’s difficult to draw any definite conclusions regarding recommendations or direct impact but there was about a sixty percent reduction in cancers overall across the board, again, a small population. There was a reduction from about nine percent to about 4 percent incidence of cancer. :25Choti says more studies looking directly at vitamin D to prevent cancer in a larger group of people are needed. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
