ANCHOR LEAD: A NEW CONTRACEPTIVE ENTIRELY ELIMINATES A WOMAN’S MONTHLY PERIOD, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
Lybrel is the name of a new oral contraceptive that has just received FDA approval. It’s distinguishing feature is this pill totally eliminates monthly bleeding. Ann Burke, an obstetrician gynecologist at Johns Hopkins, says such a concept has been around for quite some time.
BURKE: I think what people have to come to realize over the last several years is that it’s really not necessary to have a monthly period, it’s really a modern construct. And I think both physicians and patients have become more comfortable as we’ve moved toward getting your period every three months with medications we’ve been providing birth control off label to prevent women from getting their periods for a lot longer period of time. And I think it’s pretty much recognized at this point that not getting your period for an extended period of time is medically safe as far as your uterus is concerned. :30
Burke says this pill will likely be slightly more expensive than others. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
