ANCHOR LEAD: THE LEADING CAUSE OF AMPUTATIONS IN KIDS IS LAWN MOWERS,
ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
Traumatic amputation of body parts is one dire consequence of kids and their interaction with lawn mowers. That’s according to Rick Redett, a pediatric plastic surgeon at Johns Hopkins and one author of a recent report on the problem.
REDETT: We predominantly see traumatic injuries to the foot or the hand, it can be bad lacerations to the foot or the hand or it can be as severe as a hand or a foot or a finger or a toe amputation. It’s probably the most common cause of traumatic amputation in this age group that we see in the spring and early summer. :17
Parents need to keep younger kids off the lawn when mowing is underway, but must also carefully assess whether older kids can be entrusted with the job.
REDETT: Make sure that your child is mature enough to mow the yard. I think they need to know the basic safety precautions you take. Wear eye protection, wear boots, wear long pants. :11
Even mowers with ample safety features and automatic cutoffs are involved in many cases of injury and amputation. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
