ANCHOR LEAD: FEDERAL FUNDING CUTS ARE LEADING RESEARCHERS TO NOVEL SOLUTIONS, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
Breast cancer researcher Ben Park of Johns Hopkins is developing a new line of work to offset massive decreases in federal funding: acting. Park has a cameo role in a documentary entitled “Summer Running,” which follows two women- one of whom runs to help raise funds for breast cancer research, and the other a breast cancer patient. Park says the funds generated by these means are crucial.
PARK: So for someone like me that’s incredibly important. I really rely upon all this type of philanthropic, foundation money to help offset the more traditional safe science I have to do in order to maintain funding for the lab and if we didn’t have this I think it would really, really hurt us and our ability to actually try things that are a little risky, but are also, in my opinion, much more likely to translate into real therapies for breast cancer. :22
Copies of “Summer Running,” can be purchased at www.stompcancer.org. The proceeds are used to help fund researchers like Park. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
