AVOID HIP REPLACEMENT
ANCHOR LEAD: CAN HIP RESURFACING HELP YOUNGER PATIENTS AVOID HIP REPLACEMENT? ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
A technique called hip resurfacing is being touted as an alternative to traditional hip replacement in younger patients, with a device manufactured in England having received FDA approval. Instead of cutting a lot of bone and replacing the entire joint, only the surfaces that rub against each other- so called articular surfaces – are actually replaced. Marc Hungerford, an orthopedic surgeon at Johns Hopkins, describes the technique.
HUNGERFORD: What’s new about resurfacing and it’s not really new, it’s redeveloped, is the resurfacing of both sides of the joint. A more durable socket component has been developed which is all metal. So now, instead of the articulation, the joint being metal on plastic or metal on cartilage, it’s metal on metal. And that’s really what the new development is all about. :23
Hungerford is skeptical of the supposed benefits of hip resurfacing over traditional hip replacement. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
