ANCHOR LEAD: THE CDC HAS RELEASED ITS RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CONTAINING PANDEMIC FLU, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released guidelines for containing a pandemic strain of influenza, if and when such a strain emerges. Global in scope and relying largely on isolation, the guidelines focus on specific groups of people, but especially children, as transmitting infection. Gabe Kelen, director of the Center for Emergency Preparedness at Johns Hopkins, says these guidelines are scientifically based.
KELEN: The issue of keeping children home for weeks or even months is based on work by actually several different people. It was modeled out that one of the best ways to prevent the spread or break the spread of infection is by closing the schools or keeping children from being able to congregate in close circles such as schools, that they’re actually the key to the spread of infection. :24
Critics worry that such isolation would have dire social and economic impact. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
