PET RODENT RISK
ANCHOR LEAD : PET RODENTS INFECTED WITH A VIRULENT FORM OF SALMONELLA HAVE BEEN REPORTED, SAYS ELIZABETH TRACEY
An especially virulent form of Salmonella transmitted to people from pet rodents has been reported in a recent issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Forty percent of those infected required hospitalization for intravenous antibiotic administration. Steve Solga, a gastroenterologist at Johns Hopkins, says emergence of this resistant strain of bacteria is not surprising.
SOLGA: Given all the antibiotics that are thrown around in pet stores and in veterinary medicine, and in hospitals, appropriately or inappropriately, I think emergence of bacterial resistance is something that we’re going to hear more and more about. And the impact on our gut flora and the impact on our overall health remains to be seen. I would say obvious routine hygiene and be careful what you eat. Read the labels, be careful what you buy, try to eliminate hormones and excess antibiotics from our diet. :25
Solga says it’s still too early to try modifying gut flora to affect weight but that day may come. I’m Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
