EASING MORNING SICKNESS

ANCHOR LEAD: MORNING SICKNESS CAN BE EASED WITH TWO OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATIONS, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS

Recent surveys reveal that an astonishing 90 percent of women experience morning sickness while pregnant. Frank Witter, associate professor of obstetrics at Johns Hopkins, is not surprised by this number. 12

WITTER: Having nausea in the mornings is very very common in pregnancy. So the 90 percent is not an overestimate, really. :06

The good news for women who suffer from morning sickness is that over the counter medications may help. :06

WITTER: I would say the one to use really is Dramamine or the combination of 10 mg of pyridoxine plus half a Unisom tablet. :10

The combination of pyridoxine, or vitamin B6 and half a Unisom tablet is equivalent to a prescription medication that is no longer marketed in the United States despite its stellar safety record, Dr. Witter says. Some people travel to Canada to obtain it, but for those who can't make the trip, taking the combination is as close as your local pharmacy. Of course talk with your own obstetrician before trying it.

At the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, I'm Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
