PREDIABETES

ANCHOR LEAD: A NEW CATEGORY OF PEOPLE AT RISK FOR DIABETES ARE THOSE WITH PREDIABETES, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS

About 41 million Americans have a condition that's just been designated prediabetes. The term refers to blood sugars between meals of 100 to 125 milligrams per deciliter, and it defines those at risk for full blown diabetes. Chrisopher Saudek, professor of endocrinology at Johns Hopkins and a diabetes expert, says that people who hear they are prediabetic can do something about it.

SAUDEK: We've decided to call it prediabetes because first of all it is at very high risk for going on to be diabetic and secondly there is something that can be done to prevent that sequence. The Diabetes Prevention Program is a large NIH study which just came out several years ago and proves that a rigorous diet and activities program can actually prevent diabetes in these high risk, prediabetic people. :25

You can find out if you have prediabetes with a glucose tolerance test ordered by your primary care physician.

At the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, I'm Elizabeth Tracey reporting.
