HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?
ANCHOR LEAD: Vitamin supplements, despite their reputation, may cause harm in otherwise healthy individuals. Mat Edelson reports
We've all heard of the Minimum Recommended Daily Allowance for vitamins and nutrients. But how about the maximum RDA? Many supplements such as Vitamin C now have maximum RDA's. That's because exceeding those amounts has been linked to increasing the odds that healthy people will suffer ill effects, such as stomach irritation. While Johns Hopkins Dr. Benjamin Caballero says people rarely die from a vitamin overdose, studies on chronic problems related to vitamin intake are beginning to surface. For example
CABALLERO :10 "…Long term intake of high doses of Vitamin A increases the risk of hip fractures and osteoporosis..."
Caballero says these studies may help reshape the mindset that drives the vitamin industry
CABALLERO :13 "The predominant idea that 'even when there's no evidence that this will protect me against cancer, it won't do any harm'...you have to be careful with that concept, which is predominant, even among scientists..."
Next, a look at the best way to take vitamins and minerals.
