History of Global Health and Disease The Johns Hopkins Institute of the History of Medicine Dual Degree Programs Graduate students in the Department of the History of Medicine, who are concentrating on the History of Global Health and Disease are eligible to combine their PhD degree with an MHS degree in International Health in the Bloomberg School of Public Health. In addition, doctoral students in the Department of International Health may combine their PhD with an MA in the History of Disease and Public Health. MHS Degree in International Health Students enrolled in the doctoral program in the History of Medicine have the opportunity to complete a dual degree (Ph.D. in the History of Medicine and an MHS in International Health). This option is limited to students concentrating in the History of Global Health and Disease. Students seeking a dual degree would enter the Ph.D. program through the normal admissions process and register in the School of Medicine. After matriculation into the doctoral program the student can apply to the MHS program in the Department of International Health. An advisor from that department will be assigned to a student upon their acceptance into the MHS program. They would continue to register within the School of Medicine, while taking courses to fulfill the MHS requirements with one exception. In order to generate an academic record and to obtain the MHS degree, the student will be required to register for 2 academic credits during a summer term in the School of Public Health. Masters Degree in the History of Disease and Public Health Students enrolled in the doctoral program in International Health have the opportunity to complete a dual degree (Ph.D. in International Health and M.A. in History of Global Health and Disease). This program is modeled on a current option in which doctoral students from other departments in the School of Public Health or other schools in the university may obtain an MHS in International Health if they fulfill the degree requirements of the Department of International Health. The student would enter the Ph.D. program through the normal admissions process and register in the School of Public Health. After matriculation into the doctoral program the student can apply to the M.A. program in the Department of the History of Medicine. An advisor from that department will be assigned to a student upon their acceptance into the M.A. program. They would continue to register within the School of Public Health while taking courses to fulfill the M.A. requirements with one exception. In order to generate an academic record and to obtain the M.A. degree, the student will be required to register for 2 academic credits during a summer term in the School of Medicine. The timing of courses can be flexible and be decided upon by the student and his/her advisor. A total of 18 credit hours of formal course work are required, plus a 3 credit Master's essay (see attached documentation on the requirements for the M.A.). This essay may be used to develop a paper for publication that can be incorporated into the doctoral thesis requirement for International Health. |
