Center for the Chronic Myeloproliferative Disorders
The Center for the Chronic Myeloproliferative Disorders was established in 2002 to meet the needs of patients with Polycythemia Vera, Primary Myelofibrosis, Essential Thrombocytosis, Systemic Mastocytosis or the Hypereosinophilic Syndrome, to investigate the basic mechanisms involved in their causation and the best management practices.
Building on 45 years of clinical experience in the management of the chromic myeloproliferative disorders in the Hematology Division at Johns Hopkins as well as active basic science and clinical research programs dedicated to these disorders, the Center for the Chronic Myeloproliferative Disorders provides in one setting comprehensive consultation for Polycythemia Vera, Primary Myelofibrosis, Essential Thrombocytosis, Systemic Mastocytosis and Hypereosinophilic Syndrome patients.
The chronic myeloproliferative disorders are usually compatible with substantial longevity if care is exercised in their diagnosis and management. However, because these disorders are uncommon, frequently mimic each other or change their clinical behavior over time, they are not always easy to distinguish from one another, from other myeloid neoplasms or even from benign disorders blood. The mission of the Center for the Chronic Myeloproliferative Disorders is provide the expertise necessary to overcome these clinical barriers, while conducting research to improve their diagnosis and management.
Consultation begins with evaluation by a Center faculty member and involves as necessary physicians from the disciplines of Pathology, Nuclear Medicine, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Pediatrics and Obstetrics. The intent of the Center for the Chronic Myeloproliferative Disorders is to facilitate access to all the medical and laboratory evaluations necessary for accurate diagnosis and timely management decisions for both patients and their physicians.

The Center for the Chronic Myeloproliferative Disorders is committed to providing prompt access to consultations, second opinions and medical education for patients and their families and to facilitating their care by their personal physician.
Partnership with Physicians
Physicians in the Center for the Chronic Myeloproliferative Disorders are committed to working closely in a consultant capacity with referring physicians to provide second opinions and advice with respect to the diagnosis and management of the various chronic myeloproliferative disorders. Every effort is made to respond promptly to facilitate the referring phsyician’s patient-management plans.
