JHH-HEIC uses a variety of new microbiologic techniques to describe outbreaks of infectious diseases in the Hosptial. The JHH laboratory is able to offer these advanced techniques to other healthcare epidemiologists.

Genetic typing techniques can be employed to determine if samples from multiple sources are related. These tests compare the genetic blueprint of the organisms for their degree of similarity and the likelihood that they are clones or are clonally related. Several methods can be used for this analysis and which method is most appropriate is based on specific characterisitcs of the organism and the samples collected.
