The Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control and Antibiotic Management Programs at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions are involved in research projects that examine 1)risks for, outcomes associated with, and methods of prevention of healthcare-associated infections, including catheter-related bloodstream infections, surgical site infections, Clostridium difficile infections, influenza and other important nosocomial infections; 2) epiemiology and outcomes associated with antibiotic resistance, including VRE, MRSA, and resistant Gram negative organisms; 3) bioterrorism preparedness and surveillance; and 4) methods of antimicrobial management and utilization of antimicrobial therapy.  In addition, both programs provide opportunities for Infectious Disease Fellows to develop skills in practical hospital epidemiology and antibiotic management, including outbreak investigation, policy development, and antimicrobial use evaluation.  The group has three infectious disease physicians with advanced training in hospital epidemiology and research methods, a research coordinator, four research assistants, a programmer analyst/statistician, seven infection control nurse epidemiologists and an infectious disease pharmacist to facilitate execution of research activities and to provide clinical expertise in infection control and pharmacology.  In addition, our group is a member of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Epicenters of Excellence through which we work collaboratively with six other pre-eminent academic medical centers to address significant research questions in the areas of hospital epidemiology and antibiotic management.
